Tahir Kiyani: His Story

Tahir Khan Kayani is an aviator and aerial photographer whose work documents Pakistan’s landscapes from a rare perspective — the sky. Trained at the New York Institute of Photography and drawing on decades of flying experience, he captures the country’s vast geography with the precision of a pilot and the patience of an artist. From the Arabian Sea’s shifting coastline to the deserts and mountain ranges of Balochistan, the Karakoram, and the Himalayas, his images explore the meeting of land, light, and history. Beyond flight, he has hiked many of the terrains he photographs and remains active in endurance pursuits — including marathon running and off-road rally racing — experiences that deepen his understanding of Pakistan’s rugged environment. He has exhibited internationally and co-authored the book “Balochistan: Air-Panoramas and Landscapes” with Aziz Jamali. His work has also appeared in publications such as the Subjective Atlas of Pakistan (co-published by Oxford University Press), reflecting a continuing effort to record the country’s natural and cultural identity from above.
