Myself

Tahir Khan Kayani is an aviator and aerial photographer whose work documents Pakistan’s landscapes from a rare perspective — the sky. Trained at the New York Institute of Photography and drawing on decades of flying experience, he captures the country’s vast geography with the precision of a pilot and the patience of an artist. From the Arabian Sea’s shifting coastline to the deserts and mountain ranges of Balochistan, the Karakoram, and the Himalayas, his images explore the meeting of land, light, and history. Beyond flight, he has hiked many of the terrains he photographs and remains active in endurance pursuits — including marathon running and off-road rally racing — experiences that deepen his understanding of Pakistan’s rugged environment. He has exhibited internationally and co-authored the book “Balochistan: Air-Panoramas and Landscapes” with Aziz Jamali. His work has also appeared in publications such as the Subjective Atlas of Pakistan (co-published by Oxford University Press), reflecting a continuing effort to record the country’s natural and cultural identity from above.

About Hydaspes' Lightbox

Hydaspes’ Lightbox is an independent photography platform founded by Tahir Khan Kayani, an aviator and aerial photographer whose work explores Pakistan’s landscapes through flight, endurance, and light. The name joins history with craft: Hydaspes—the ancient name of the River Jhelum, Kayani’s hometown—echoes a place known to historians yet quietly familiar to him; Lightbox evokes the photographer’s workspace where light and perspective are shaped into meaning.

The project began as an experiment—an attempt to share images without attaching a name, allowing the work to speak for itself. Over time it evolved into a personal archive of Pakistan’s geography, seen from both the air and the ground. From aerial panoramas to environmental and documentary studies, Hydaspes’ Lightbox reflects a continuing curiosity rather than a commercial pursuit.

Its body of work includes exhibitions in Pakistan and abroad, collaborations with artists and institutions, and publications such as “Balochistan: Air-Panoramas and Landscapes” (co-authored with Aziz Jamali) and contributions to the Subjective Atlas of Pakistan (Oxford University Press). At its core, Hydaspes Lightbox remains a quiet tribute—to the land, to observation, and to the enduring patience required to see beauty from above and within.
